My Experience Shadowing Naturopathic Doctors
I had the incredible opportunity to shadow naturopathic doctors at the NUHS Whole Health Center. With a background in education and leadership, and as someone living with complex chronic conditions, this experience was both deeply personal and professionally inspiring.
What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct healthcare profession that blends natural therapies with modern scientific principles. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are trained as primary care providers who diagnose, treat, and manage both acute and chronic illnesses. Their approach goes beyond symptom management to address the root causes of disease, considering the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, and environmental factors that influence health.
A Patient-Centered Approach That Resonates
One of the most striking aspects of naturopathic care is the length and depth of patient visits. Initial consultations typically last 60 to 90 minutes, with follow-up appointments ranging from 30 to 60 minutes. This extended time allows NDs to thoroughly understand each patient’s unique health story and craft personalized treatment plans.
As a patient with chronic illnesses, I’ve often felt rushed or unheard in conventional healthcare settings. The naturopathic model’s commitment to truly listening and partnering with patients is something I deeply appreciate. It offers not only symptom relief but also a path toward long-term healing and wellness.
Therapies That Support Holistic Health
During my shadowing, I observed a variety of therapies commonly used in naturopathic treatment plans, including:
- Nutritional and Lifestyle counseling and personalized dietary guidance
- Hydrotherapy
- Herbal and botanical medicine
- Homeopathy
- Physical medicine techniques such as manual therapy, adjustment, and massage
- Mind-body practices, including stress management, mindfulness
- Complementary treatment to support conventional modalities and maximize positive response
- Depending on the state, NDs also prescribe conventional medications
Key Takeaways from My Experience
- Whole-Person Care: Naturopathic medicine addresses all aspects of health-physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, and environmental- recognizing their interconnectedness.
- Prevention and Empowerment: Prevention is foundational, with a strong focus on educating and empowering patients to take an active role in their health.
- Supportive Learning Environment: The clinic fosters a culture of growth and adaptability, preparing future clinicians to deliver compassionate, patient-centered care.
Looking Forward
This experience has reinforced my passion for holistic wellness and healthcare and shaped my vision as I build Flourishing Vitality, LLC. While becoming an ND would be an amazing career, my current trajectory allows me to utilize my interests and experience with health coaching to integrate naturopathic principles into my holistic wellness approach. I am inspired by the potential of naturopathic medicine to transform lives, especially for those managing complex, chronic conditions like my own. I’m excited about the potential to partner with licensed Naturopathic providers committed to holistic healing.
